Congregation celebrates 152 years since Emacipation Proclamation

New Year's Day in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared slaves in confederate states free.

Mt. Zion Baptist Church in east Knoxville held a special service Thursday filled with song, scripture and prayer to remember the historical moment. Two Austin-East students also read the proclamation aloud.

Rev. Harold Middlebrook, a civil rights leader and friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., said this ceremony was about honoring the past and building a better future.

Knoxville Center Mall has served the east part of town and nearby counties for the last 30 years.

Police search for armed robbery suspect

Police are searching for a suspect accused of robbing an east Knoxville convenience store with a gun.

Officers responded to an armed robbery at the Breadbox on Millertown Pike at about 3:15 a.m. Tuesday. The suspect came into the store armed with a handgun and demanded money from the cash register, according to Knoxville police. The suspect left the store with an unknown amount of cash.

At this time, police don't know if the suspect left in a vehicle or on foot.

East Knoxville Walgreens closing down on Dec. 31

(WBIR) An East Knoxville Walgreens will be closing its doors in just a couple of days.

The store is located on East Magnolia Avenue in East Knoxville.

A message recorded on the store's phone line stated the business will shut down for good on December 31.

A store employee confirmed the closure to 10News.

Crews put out E. Knoxville house fire after neighbor calls 911

(WBIR) Crews put out a small fire inside an East Knoxville home Saturday night after a neighbor called 911 after seeing smoke coming from the front of the house.

Knoxville Fire Department said crews got to the scene on the 700 Block of South Chestnut Street just before 6 p.m. No one was home at the time.

Firefighters put out the small blaze which was confined to the front of the house.

Traffic reopen on I-40 after accident

Traffic on Interstate 40 is back open after an accident shut down the eastbound lanes for an hour Tuesday night.

The accident happened just past Asheville Highway near mile marker 294.

Police say a passenger in a car heading East became upset Tuesday evening shortly after 6:00 p.m.

Investigators say the passenger threatened the driver of a silver Hyundai that he would jump out of the car. The passenger even opened the door while the car was moving.

Homeowner fires gun during reported attempted burglary

(WBIR - East Knox County) The Knox County Sheriff's Office is investigating a reported attempted burglary in East Knox County Friday night.

Deputies responded to a call on Millertown Pike near Mascot just after 8 p.m. The homeowner told the officers he saw three people standing outside on his property with plans to break in and burglarize his home. The man told officers he shot his gun and the people ran away.

KCSO said there were no injuries in the incident, but the investigation is still ongoing.
