Top 10 Places to Walk in Knoxville

Walking is a great form of exercise.  Anyone, regardless of age and fitness level, can start a walking routine.  All you need are a sturdy pair of walking shoes and you are ready to go.   The question is where to walk?  Knoxville has a Walk Score of 40 and is labeled car-dependent which means most of us have to drive to work, errands, and for entertainment.   However, there are still fabulous places in Knoxville to walk.  Here are my Top 10 suggestions:

  • Knoxville Greenways.  Did you know that Knoxville has over 50 miles of paved greenways?  Located in all parts of the city, check out the list and find one in your area.
  • The Knoxville Zoo.  Get your walk in and check out the animals at the same time.  While the Zoo does charge admission, you can buy a year's pass to make it even more affordable.
  • Ijams Nature Center.  Ijams has 10 miles of natural surface trails.  Check out the beautiful wildlife and scenery.  (These 10 miles are considered part of the Knoxville Greenway system, but I think they deserve to be listed separately.)
  • Your neighborhood.  Grab a neighbor, a dog, a child, or your ipod and walk your 'hood.  Most neighborhoods have some hills in them which makes walking even more challenging - a great health benefit.
  • Looking for a house?  Walk a couple of neighborhoods you would like to live in to check them out.
  • West Town Mall opens at 7AM for walkers, before the stores open.  You can walk without the temptation to spend money.  This is also a great place for rainy or snowy days.
  • Some area churches have fitness facilities for their members.
  • A treadmill at a gym.  Knoxville has quite a few choices when it comes to gyms, some even as low as $10/month.
  • In place in front of a TV.  There is a DVD collection by Leslie Sansone called Walk Off the Pounds.
  • Do you work in an office?  Walk the stairs before work, after work, during lunch, or during your breaks.  Don't have stairs? Walk around your office building.
