It's been an annual tradition on the streets of Knoxville for more than a decade, and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is hoping East Tennesseans will turn out once again this month to help those fighting breast cancer.

For years, this race has seen tremendous growth. In 2010, they hit a record 14,000 participants. Last year, they were down to 11,600. Organizers hope that drop doesn't continue this year.

The organization said there are reasons, aside from the struggling economy, that play a role in the recent drop. The Race for the Cure competes with several other races in Knoxville in October.

"There is a lot of pink in opportunity that things get lost, and I just want people to know we help local women," said Amy Dunaway with Susan G. Komen.

The local Komen group says from Friday through Monday, October 22, they will offer a $5 discount for participants who want to sign up. Instead of a $35 fee, a discount code will allow you to to register for $30.

Dunaway said meeting their goal will allow them to continue to provide 1,000 free mammograms through the Knox Co. Health Department.

"[Breast cancer] doesn't just affect the patient, it affects their entire realm or their sphere of friends and influence, and now we ask those spheres of friends to help," Dunaway added.

To sign up, visit the Knoxville Susan G. Komen website, and under the "Register Online For Race Today!" section, type "WBIR$5" in the discount code box. WBIR is a media sponsor of the event.

The race takes place October 27th at World's Fair Park.
