Farragut students donate cans of food, money to the Love Kitchen

Farragut High School students loaded up their decorated cars with donated cans and delivered them to the Love Kitchen on Friday afternoon.

The school estimates it collected about 10,000 cans of food for the local non-profit. Students and the community also raised nearly $2,500 for the Love Kitchen through a collection at the Bearden football game and a pancake breakfast.

This was the school's first year raising money and food donations for the Love Kitchen.

Homeless Student Report shows startling numbers

School systems across the state are seeing more students come through their doors without basic necessities, according to new report from the Tennessee Comptroller's Office of Research and Education Accountability.

The Homeless Students in Tennessee Public Schools report shows startling numbers of students classified as homeless.

In our viewing area, two school systems stood out as having especially high numbers of homeless students.

Cumberland County reported 696 homeless students in the 2010- 2011 school year. Hamblen County reported 649.

Free classes teach adults to read

A surprising number of adults cannot read or read only at an elementary school level.

Friends of Literacy helps them develop reading skills for free.

The students in a classroom at the old Knoxville High School dare to dream.

They are new readers.

"The girl is jumping and kicking," one student sounded out from a textbook.

It is the only class in Knoxville for adults who can't read.

Cellular Sales donates $45K to Knox Co. Schools

Some Knox County School programs got a boost Thursday, thanks to a local business.

Cellular Sales gave $45-thousand dollars to the Great Schools Partnership.  The organization uses private donations to help fund programs in Knox County Schools.

After the presentation, Cellular Sales officials toured the Verizon Cellular Sales Center for Academic Excellence at West High School.   The center is funded by donations made to the Great Schools Partnership.

School officials say it is making a difference.

Knox superintendent takes over school bus duty for one lucky teacher

Karns Elementary School had a special addition in its morning drop-off line on Thursday.

Superintendent Dr. Jim McIntyre surprised teacher Beth Caballero by taking over for her on morning bus duty.

This 4th grade teacher says she appreciates the relief!

"It shows how much he really does realize all the things that we're doing from bus duty to teaching, this is a great surprise. It's a great help for me.  I can go and enjoy my morning," said Caballero with a laugh.

Television networks have chosen some of the Tennessee Vols games to broadcast for the upcoming season.

The Vols will now appear in at least 25 televised games, with 15 of those being national telecasts.

Pellissippi State nursing program moves closer to national accreditation

Pellissippi State's nursing program is one step closer to national accreditation.

The Tennessee Department of Health's board of nursing approved Pellissippi State Community College's associate degree program in nursing last month. That decision will allow Pellissippi to pursue national accreditation.

The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission has invited Pellissippi to complete a written self-study. When that is turned in, the NLNAC will visit the campus and a governing board review will determine if the program will receive accreditation.
