Grainger Co. Tomato Festival underway in Rutledge

Farmers arrived at the campus of Rutledge Elementary and Middle School long before sunrise Friday to begin setting up for the annual Grainger County Tomato Festival.

The festival officially got underway for the public at noon Friday when farmers and vendors began selling produce for the "early shopping" period.  The festival gets into full swing Friday night with live music at the Grainger County Opree.

The festival runs through late Sunday afternoon.

Despite extreme highs and lows with this year's weather, farmers say the freshly-picked produce is some of the best in the festival's 20-year history.

The festival's famous Tomato Wars are held Saturday at 10 a.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Admission and parking at the festival is free. Organizers say the effort put into the event by farmers and volunteers is priceless for Grainger County.

"From the artists, the musicians, the farmers, this is local people coming here and everyone volunteers to take their time [for the festival] and show off Grainger County," said festival spokesperson Kathie Self.  "You couldn't ask for better people."

A full schedule of events and maps of the festival can be found on the Grainger County Tomato Festival website.
