Murder victim remembered for longtime public service

(WBIR-Knoxville) A note was left on the desk of Gary Cooley Wednesday.

It read: "Dear Gary, I want to thank you for all your help with our 'Keep my Tennessee Home' program.'"

Jackie Mayor worked with Cooley. She said he was working on getting two more families connected to a home of their own Monday afternoon. The next day, one of his co-workers found him and another woman dead inside his house.

East Knoxville Pilot armed robbery suspects in custody

(WBIR) Police arrested two suspects, including one minor, accused of robbing a gas station in east Knoxville.

Deonte Womac, 18, of Knoxville was charged with aggravated robbery and especially aggravated kidnapping. Officials said Womac will also be charged with aggravated robbery for an incident at the Family Market on Tennessee Avenue earlier this month.

The other suspect, a 17-year-old, is expected to be charged with aggravated robbery on Monday.

Two men charged after high-speed chase in Holston Hills

Update Monday 10:15 am:

(WBIR) Officials released the suspects' names accused of leading police on a high-speed chase in east Knoxville Easter morning.

Knoxville police said they received a call at about 3:40 p.m. Sunday, reporting people in two vehicles shooting at each other on Jefferson Avenue.

Students plant community garden at YMCA

Friday, some students got a hands-on lesson in gardening and sharing.

Children involved in after-school programs at the Cansler Family YMCA planted the spring crop in their community giving garden.

The students will learn about gardening through programs at the Y, then share the fruits of their labor with people in the community through food banks like Second Harvest. It's part of the YMCA's mission to help teach children life skills and serve the community.

East Knoxville home robbed at gunpoint

An East Knoxville home was ransacked and items were stolen during an armed robbery Thursday evening.

Knoxville police say the homeowner was home when three men wearing all black and ski masks forced their way inside and robbed the home at gunpoint.

They took some money and other items before fleeing.

An investigation is ongoing.
