Knox Co. Schools expands early literacy program

Administrators and teachers in Knox County are preparing for the new year. Students head back in less than two weeks, and when they do, a new early literacy program awaits.

Norwood Elementary is one of five schools to pilot an intensive reading initiative last year.

"We are sending about 90% of our first graders into second grade reading on grade level," said Beth Lackey, Principal.

Cheddars opens newest location in West Knoxville

Cheddars' newest East Tennessee restaurant opened Monday. It's located at Gallaher View Road and Kingston Pike in West Knoxville.

A good crowd was there for dinner Monday evening, and one customer we talked with says it was a good first experience.

"I've never seen a restaurant go up as quick as this did. I just live about five minutes from here, and I've been looking forward to coming in because of the experience I had at the Maryville restaurant, and the prices are unbelievable," said Ed Smith.

Tex-Mex restaurant Chuy's opens Tuesday

Tex-Mex restaurant Chuy's opens its doors Tuesday at 11 a.m. It will be the chain's first Knoxville location.

It's located right in front of the new Kroger Marketplace at Cedar Bluff Road and Kingston Pike.

The Austin, Texas-based chain is known for its authentic and fresh food.

Chuy's Knoxville owner promises an entertaining atmosphere and great food made from scratch daily.

The restaurant plans to hire about 170 staff members.

Publix grand opening scheduled for Thursday

Publix grand opening scheduled for Thursday

The grand opening of the first Publix in Knoxville is set for Thursday, August 2nd at 7 a.m.

The new grocery store is located in the Northshore Town Center in West Knoxville.

The 56,000-square-foot facility contains a produce selection, bakery, deli with prepared food, a salad bar, seafood, event planning center, cafe and full-service pharmacy with a drive-thru.

A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 6:45 a.m.  The release stated that Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero and Knox County Mayor Time Burchett will speak at the event.

McGhee Tyson Airport celebrates historic flight

McGhee Tyson Airport celebrated the 75th anniversary of the first commercial flight to land at its Blount County location Sunday.

According to airport spokesperson, Becky Huckaby, an American Airlines Stinson TriMotor traveled to the airport July 29, 1937.  She said it was capable of carrying 10 passengers.

Turkey Creek Public Market closes

Just 11 months into its opening, the Turkey Creek Public Market closed its doors to the public Sunday.

"It's been very profitable for us. We've also learned (a lot)," said Retta Gregg, who owns and works for local dried foods company Tennessee Tastes. It is just one of the hundreds of vendors at the West Knox County venue.

More than 450 vendors took advantage of the marketplace, following a two-year, $8 million renovation. The site was the former Outlet Mall.

East Tennessee Olympian Claire Donahue advances to 100 meter butterfly finals

Update: Donahue finished 5th in the semifinals with a time of 57.42. She has qualified for the finals that will take place Sunday.

LONDON - Being awakened by fireworks Friday night didn't disturb Claire Donahue this morning.

The 23-year-old from Lenoir City, Tenn., advanced to semifinals of the 100-meter butterfly at the Olympic Games. Donahue's time of 58.06 seconds ranks seventh out of the 16 swimmers who advanced.

Donahue, a Western Kentucky graduate, was sleeping in the Olympic Village until the sound of fireworks from the opening ceremony awakened her.
