Carter Elem. students prepare for last year in old building

Carter Elementary students are getting ready to have their last year of classes in the school's 74-year-old building.

Next year, after a decade of discussion on the matter, a new 89,000 square foot facility will be built for the students of Carter Elementary School. Officials broke ground on it last November.

The building will have 30 classrooms and hold up to 800 students. It will be located just down the road from the old one on Strawberry Plains Pike and will cost $13.8 million to build.

Pellissippi State's newest campus opens, prepares for fall semester

The doors are open and class will soon be in session at Pellissippi State Community College's newest location.

The campus dean, along with more than 100 others cut the ribbon to the Strawberry Plains campus Monday afternoon.

The newest campus is the fifth for Pellissippi State.

The new facility features multiple classrooms, gathering areas, a cafeteria and kitchen, plus a theater-style presentation room.

Educators say the new campus' location is key, allowing them to offer more creative degrees and serve more people.

Dental clinic serves hundreds of Knox County students

Knox County students will return to school next week, and Saturday many families got the supplies and health resources they needed to start the year off right.

Western Heights Dental teamed up with Remote Area Medical (RAM) to provide the services. RAM volunteers are known for traveling far distances to deliver health care to people in need, but organizers say it is important to recognize local needs, too.

"When we were asked by the folks at Western, we gladly accepted the offer to come over and to work with them," said Ron Brewer, RAM Director.

Knoxville horse rescue full, adoption day Saturday

A horse rescue facility is at capacity after taking in another 8 horses.

Horse Haven of Tennessee already housed more than 30 horses. The extra eight limits space at their facility in West Knox County.

Over the past two weeks, four horses were rescued from Sevier County, three from Morgan County and one from Campbell County. The recent rescues are malnourished and have skin disorders.

The rescue must hold those particular animals for future court cases.

Non-profit opens doors for those with disabilities

A non-profit called Open Doors Tennessee is committed to providing resources for people with disabilites.

Time at the Knoxville Zoo supports that mission.

Visitors know the animals by name after a week-long "Connect Camp" at the Knoxville Zoo.

"It's super fun and awesome!" camper Christian Rice said.

The camp is part of Open Doors Tennessee.

Police arrest suspects in Magnolia Ave BB gun shooting, robbery

A Knoxville man and teenager are now charged with an armed robbery that ended with the victim being shot with a BB gun.

According to Knoxville Police, Terry Stewart, 18, was arrested on July 27 and charged with aggravated robbery.

A 16-year-old suspect was tracked down Wednesday night at the Regency Inn on Magnolia Avenue. When officers approached, they say the teen jumped from the second floor and ran. He was caught after a brief pursuit and charged with aggravated robbery.

Knox Co. celebrates decline in childhood obesity

Knox County held a luncheon Wednesday to honor those teachers and staff members who helped to make sure kids stay active and learn how to make healthy choices.

School officials also announced some good news when it comes to overweight students. The number of obese kids has gone down in Knox County compared to last year, and Superintendent Dr. Jim McIntyre says that will help them both in and out of the classroom.

"It's about our kids being healthy. It's about fighting childhood obesity," he said.
